The YI board organized a virtual seminar on October 8, 2020. The seminar was hosted on Zoom and included nine talks which were selected based on submitted abstract. Three talks were chosen per category which were ‘Classics 1’, ‘Out of the box’, ‘Classics 2’ (see programme below). For each category, we awarded a prize money of 100€ for the best talk which was voted upon by the seminar’s participants. Our awardees were Ana Santos Almeida (Dublin), Simon Grassmann (New York) and Llyod Montgomery (Hamburg). We furthermore were happy to welcome the well-known British science communicator Kat Arney, who gave a keynote talk about “Telling stories about science”.
All in all, the meeting was a great success and received a lot of positive feedback (100% gave 4 or 5 of 5 points ‘I enjoyed the meeting very much.’). We were able to gather over 90 participants of which about 60% were from Germany and others joining from all over the world mainly, from our yEFIS peers from Europe, but even as far away as Singapore and Peru. A quarter of the participants were DGfI YI members and roughly half were PhD students, otherwise postdocs, Bachelor and Master students and even PIs.
We hope to host more of such events in the future so stay tuned!
