Autumn School Akademie für Immunologie

Merseburg, Germany, October 7-12, 2024

The DGfI Autumn School offers an up-to-date educational journey through the immune system for everyone including students, postdocs, group leaders and industry representatives with a background in natural sciences or medicine. The program includes lectures by internationally renowned experts, student presentations as well as interactive sessions to meet the speakers and companies to foster networking within our immunological community.

Lectures by renowned experts in immunology and Q&A sessions
Basic but also controversial concepts of immunology are discussed as well as important immunological diseases. The lectures of renowned and established immunologists will focus on topics such as the organization and evolution of the immune system, the genetic basis of the formation of the immune repertoire, the recognition of (auto)antigens, the development and selection of lymphocytes, the activation and effector mechanisms of immune cells and communication and cooperation in the immune system.

The aim is to gain an overall understanding of the correlations, processes and interactions within the immune system.

Meet-the-Speakers and poster sessions
Discuss your own research or research interests intensively with the lecturers and other participants of the Autumn School over lunch/dinner or directly at your own scientific poster during our lively poster sessions. Poster size is DINA0 (118,9 cm x 84,1 cm, height x width).

 

Round table discussion groups
The round table discussion groups enable the participants to discuss and explore a specific topic with all participants on equal footing. The topics of the round tables are defined in advance and participants are asked to forward questions and discussion points on the chosen topic prior to the event.

The moderators of the round table start with an overview or a short presentation to give a brief introduction to the topic and then lead through a discussion of the questions and topics sent by the participants in advance. Depending on the topic, participants can also discuss their own data and experiences.

When selecting the preferred round table during registration, we kindly ask all participants to suggest questions and discussion points on the topic to make sure that the discussion focuses on the specific needs and wishes of the participants.

 

Round table topics in 2024:

• Animal research (e.g. methods, writing a proposal, restriction/problems, arguments for/against animal research)
• CRISPR/Cas (e.g. in silico guide design, in vitro guide testing, Cas9 variants, mutation types, applications)
• Flow cytometry (e.g. Basics (Fluidics, Optics), Fluorochromes/Multicolor panels, Gating strategies, Compensation/Controls, Data analysis/interpretation, Cell Sorting, Troubleshooting)
• Immunotherapy
• Single cell technology (e.g. single cell transcriptomic approaches (scRNA-seq/snRNA-seq; spatial transcriptomics), scATAC-seq, experimental planning and troubleshooting (finding the right experimental setting), data analysis tools and pipelines (find the right toolbox for your question), limitations , future perspectives, usage of deposited existing data sets)
• Statistics

 

Meet-the-Companies
Meet-the-companies is a facilitated, yet informal and high-energy, social activity to encourage a large group of people to speak with one another, ask questions, and learn about specific areas of research and practice within the field of immunology. This ice-breaker event is a great chance to not only get informed about the newest products and applications but also about career options outside of academia. Detailed conversations about methods, products and job opportunities can be continued during the coffee breaks. Don´t miss this great networking opportunity.

As a speed dating format every 8 minutes, a gong rings and the participant groups (with 8 participants each) start a new conversation with another company representative. In total, each participant meets about 10 company representatives during the afternoon. Meet-the-Companies is a new way for participants and companies to get together and to share their common passion for science.

 

Social program
The Social program of the Autumn School contains a Get-together, a guided tour through the Merseburg Cathedral and a farewell party that provide you with the opportunity to relax and enjoy the company of colleagues and friends.

 

Participation
Due to limited space the number of participants is restricted to 80. In general, we receive more applications than available places, so it is worthwhile to register quickly.

The venue

Merseburg, the cathedral and university town near Halle (Saale) is one of the oldest cities in central Germany and is considered the home of the Merseburg Incantations (Merseburger Zaubersprüche), the only examples of Germanic paganism written in Old High German language. Merseburg has a castle and picturesque many-towered cathedral adjacent to the beautiful castle garden. Further interesting attractions are the Ständehaus and the Gotthardtteich.
