The founding meeting of the study group took place on Jan 12, 2021. It was organized by Isabelle Bekeredjian-Ding and Luka Cicin-Sain and had 90 people in attendance. It was opened with a few words by the meeting organizers on the relevance and history of vaccines, as well as on the need for a study group on vaccines and plans for its work. Thereupon, the attendees elected the two coordinators of the work group. Isabelle Bekeredjian-Ding and Luka Cicin-Sain were the only candidates for the position and were both elected with a majority of votes.
The scientific part of the meeting featured presentations by Gerd Sutter (LMU München), Luka Cicin Sain (HZI Braunschweig), Isabelle Bekeredjian-Ding (PEI Langen) and Benjamin Petsch (CureVac AG, Tübingen). The talks were followed by highly interesting discussions between experts from academia, regulatory agencies, pharmaceutical companies and STIKO members on best practices to rapidly and safely transfer technologies from conceptualization and preclinical testing to clinical assessments and use.
The participants agreed that that regular meetings of this kind are of highest interest and should be organized as part of the Annual Meeting of the DGfI and as stand-alone yearly workshops of the study group.
