The first annual meeting of the DGfI took place from 16 to 18 October 1969 in Freiburg im Breisgau. Even though immunology in the Federal Republic of Germany could by no means be considered established at universities and research institutions at that time, about 315 scientists attended the meeting and took part in the events with commitment and active discussion. The focus of the first annual meeting was on the field of antibody research. In about 70 lectures, which were distributed over seven sections without parallel events, the topics antibodies, immunogenetics, immune response, immunopathology, lymphocytes, cellular immunity and antigens were dealt with. A broad-based "Colloquium on Immunosuppression" concluded the conference. The abstracts of the papers were subsequently published in a pilot number of the European Journal of Immunology (EJI), founded two years later in 1971.
From then on, the Society's annual meetings took place every autumn - repeatedly as joint meetings with other European immunology societies. Since 2006, European immunologists have met every three years at the joint European Congress of Immunology, ECI.

The "Leukocyte Culture Conferences" held in the spring of 1969-1984 were continued from 1985 as the "Spring Conferences of the Society for Immunology". These conferences explicitly served as a discussion forum, especially for young scientists.
From 2005 onwards, the spring conferences were replaced by a spring school on a smaller scale, with the aim of giving a smaller group of young scientists the opportunity to further their education in immunology on an annual basis. Today, the DGfI organises 3 different schools for different target groups each year within the framework of the Academy of Immunology plus a continuing education module "Certified Immunologist DGfI".
